Sociodemographic Description  and Sexual and Reproductive Behavior in Adolescents and Young People  at Santa Ana, Nicaragua Health Area

RESUMEN

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal para identificar las características sociodemográficas  del comportamiento sexual y reproductivo de los adolescentes y jóvenes del área de Salud Santa Ana, Nicaragua, en los años 2009-2010. La información se obtuvo a través de una entrevista estructurada y elaborada para estos  fines, aplicada por el médico de familia en el consultorio y en visitas a los hogares. La muestra estuvo representada por 250 adolescentes y jóvenes con edades comprendidas de 10 a 24 años, 162 eran del sexo femenino y 88 del masculino. Se constató que el mayor porcentaje de los entrevistados eran estudiantes (46,8%), seguido de la categoría de trabajadores con el 24,4%. De los 34 adolescentes que participaron en el estudio, el 3,7% refirió haber tenido relaciones sexuales. La edad promedio de inicio de las relaciones sexuales se ubicó entre los 10 y los 14 años en la totalidad de los encuestados (34,5%), con el 78,3% de satisfacción. El método anticonceptivo mayormente utilizado para ambos sexos fue el condón (69,4%). Solo el 0,7%, en las edades comprendidas entre los 10 y los 14 años, utilizó algún método anticonceptivo. Los antecedentes de gonorrea fueron referidos por el 44,7% de los entrevistados, mientras que los abortos fueron referidos por el 26,1%. La infección de transmisión sexual más referida fue la gonorrea.

ABSTRACT

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out  to identify the sociodemographic  description and sexual and reproductive behavior in adolescents and young people of Santa Ana health area, in Nicaragua country between 2009 - 2010. An interview was applied to collect the information. The sample was represented by 250 adolescents and young persons aged 10-24  years (162 of them  were females and 88 males). Most of those that were iterviewed were students (46.8%), followed by workers (24.4%). 3.7% of the adolescents that had sexual intercourse. The average age at the beginning of sexual intercourse was between 10 and 14 years.  Of 34 adolescents (37.5) that took part in the study, had sexual intercourse. The average age at the beginning of intercourse was between 10 and 14 years (34.5%) with 78.3% of satisfaction. Condom was the most used contraceptive method for both sexes (69.4%). Only 0.7% of the age group between 10-14 used some contraceptive method. The history of gonorrhea was referred by 44.7% of the cases, whereas the abortions and menstrual regulations were reported by 26.1% of them . Gonorrhea represented the sexual transmission infection of highest incidence.
